Oliwia Maria Koczorowska is a London raised Polish artist whose primary creative focus is with photography. She is best recognized for her challenging and sometimes disturbing art-work, often related to the explicit in-depth exploration into the intimate psyche of young women growing up in our image-obsessed culture, saturated with the contant presence of social media and idealized beauty standards. She is an artist using both photography and the female gaze, combining them in an innovative way to redefine the fields of fashion, art and cinematic photography in order to make a profound impact on our fast evolving visual world. In her images we can see dominant aspects of passion, emotions and feelings, expressed through the visual aesthetic of her work.
Admired for her raw and real depictions of femininity her photography is an attempt to put her work into a larger cultural and artistic context. Instead of editing out the grit Koczorowska’s images showcase the romanticized rawness that is rarely otherwise seen in her subjects - the beautiful women whom she photographs. Her technique uses bold camera angles and unlikely cropping methods which express the sensitive perception of women and display her ability to capture this in a single moment.
Koczorowska treats her medium as an opportunity to empower her audience in order to embrace all of their insecurities and self-love. Her photography is a weapon created to smash the stereotypes of female emotions, breaking taboos and celebrating the liberation of transparency and desire. Through her pastel, dream-like photography, she creates emblematic images, transmitting emotion and energy in an open and intimate way, to capture the feelings of the sitter in her images.
She uses her creativity to construct an artisic utopia, a non-judgmental space for young females to feel adored and accepted, both by themselves and others. Her works can also be considered playful, often constructed with ‘girliness’, a bit of a smirk, but do not frown upon or collapse from inside it.
In her most recent work Koczorowska uses her voice, art and photography to inform her audience on the importance of self exploration, acceptance and the breaking of taboos through a series of conceptualized images which encourage empowerment and acceptance of individual emotions and beliefs.
The photographs of Koczorowska seek to give voice to the emotions and are fuelled with self-discovery and femininity. They span the desire for inner peace and true love and explore the the paradox of the desire for solace and complete isolation whilst craving close intimacy. She investigates the complex intersection of life as a young woman, offering a romanticized look at the process of coming of age during the moment when female bodies are photoshopped to the point where nothing is real anymore.
In simpler words; the images are a way of connecting with an audience, to start discussion, and to create change. They are a starting point, to create a more acceptable and open environment for women to express their emotions and for them to accept themselves for who they are.
